Unlocking Canada’s
Genetic Intelligence.

We are building a national genomics data foundation to safeguard biodiversity and fuel productivity across Canada’s forests, fisheries and oceans.

Canada’s natural resources are under growing pressure from climate change, biodiversity loss and global competition.

Genomics now gives us the power to unlock the genetic intelligence of forests, fisheries, freshwater systems and biodiversity to manage them more sustainably and competitively. To realize this opportunity, Canada needs coordinated, AI-ready genomic data and governance at a national scale. Our mission is to build a national genomics data foundation that enables better stewardship, faster innovation and smarter decision-making across Canada’s natural resource sectors. It will fund targeted projects while creating shared data infrastructure and governance so genomic intelligence can be used by governments, industry and communities.

Mission At A Glance

National genomics
data system

Connecting biodiversity, forestry, fisheries and ecosystem data across Canada.

Used in resource decision-making

Supporting conservation, regulation and long-term
planning.

Indigenous-led
governance embedded

Ensuring data is
managed responsibly and
collaboratively.

From monitoring
to prediction

Using genomic data to
anticipate risks and guide
action.

This mission shifts natural resource management from reactive response to predictive stewardship through integrated national coordination.

Predictive Management

Shifting resource management from reactive to predictive models to support conservation and regulatory decisions.

Biodiversity Stewardship

Creating a shared national genomics data foundation to address fragmentation in biodiversity and non-human genomics data.

Indigenous-Led Governance

Prioritizing Indigenous-led data governance and ethical stewardship as core components of the initiative’s design.

Ecosystem Productivity

Unlocking genomic power to fuel productivity and sustainable growth across Canada’s lakes, prairies and oceans.

National Strategy.
Regional Excellence.

We leverage the unique expertise and provincial partnerships of our regional Genome Centres to deliver pan-Canadian value that no single organization or province could achieve alone. This strategic orchestration connects distributed efforts across sectors and regions to turn genomic data into a collective national asset.

Positioning Data as National Infrastructure.

Genomic data is a strategic national asset that powers AI, forecasting and long-term competitiveness in the global market.

By establishing coordinated data standards and governance, we ensure that genomic intelligence is accessible to Canadian industry and innovators.

This initiative anchors Canada’s transition to a more sustainable, diversified economy by linking scientific excellence with positive environmental and social outcomes.
