Genome Canada applauds the Government of Canada’s historic investments in the next generation of Canadian researchers through commitments laid out in Budget 2018 – Equality + Growth: A Strong Middle Class, released yesterday.

Genome Canada was pleased to see significant new funding for fundamental research through the granting councils, investments in equipment researchers need through funding to the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), boosts to the Canada Research Chairs program, and the launch of a Digital Research Infrastructure Strategy to help Canada harness value from big data, including genomics-derived data sets.

“We are delighted to see considerable new federal investments in the granting councils, CFI and other key science initiatives, which portend a healthy research eco-system for Canada for years to come.  Genome Canada’s work aligns closely with these programs and initiatives. We look forward to being an integral contributor to Canadian innovation through world-class research and collaboration among researchers and research funders,” said Marc LePage, President and CEO of Genome Canada.

“The government recognizes that genomics is a big user and generator of data and we look forward to working with the task group to develop the Digital Research Infrastructure Strategy,” added Mr. LePage.

Further, Genome Canada is supportive of the government’s policy direction and concrete initiatives to increase inclusion, diversity and gender equity in Canada’s research system as well as in business innovation programs.
