Bridging the Gap from Discovery to Market.
Canada generates world-class genomics research, but this research only creates economic and societal value when it is translated into real-world products, services and practices.
Without strong public-private partnerships, too much innovation stalls before reaching the market. The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) is our national mechanism to bridge this divide. By funding collaborative R&D projects between academic researchers and industry receptors, we share the risk and leverage private-sector investment to turn discovery into application. This approach ensures that genomics strengthens Canada’s innovation economy and delivers tangible solutions to our most pressing challenges.
Mission At A Glance
Projects start with a real operational need
Companies identify where genomics can be applied in their business.
Researchers and companies build together
Scientific expertise is applied directly to a defined use case.
Developed and validated in practice
Technologies are trialed within operational settings, not just labs.
Solutions are implemented, not shelved
Projects are designed to move into use within the partner organization.
GAPP shifts the focus from basic research outputs to delivered real-world solutions through strategic ecosystem orchestration.
Market-Driven Innovation
Ensuring projects are driven by real market or operational needs identified by industry receptors to ensure high-value outcomes.
Risk-Sharing and Leverage
Using public investment to catalyze private-sector co-investment and shorten the path from innovation to market.
Productivity and Growth
Helping Canadian companies integrate genomics tools into their operations to boost productivity, reduce costs and drive sustainable growth.
Strategic Deployment
Serving as a core delivery mechanism for commercialization and adoption under the Canadian Genomics Strategy.
National Strategy. Regional Excellence.
We leverage the unique expertise of our regional Genome Centres to mobilize surveillance capabilities nationwide. This strategic orchestration ensures that genomic signals from every corner of Canada, from Arctic waters to urban centers, are connected to a unified national preparedness strategy. We turn distributed environmental data into a collective national advantage.

Turning Discovery into Durable Economic Advantage.
Genomics underpins innovation in life sciences, agri-food, natural resources and advanced manufacturing where Canada already holds global strengths.
Strategic genomics investment is the essential economic infrastructure for the twenty-first-century bioeconomy.
By focusing on adoption and market uptake, we help Canadian firms grow and commercialize at home rather than abroad to capture a share of the expanding global genomics market.
